After 30 years in North America my wife experiences this to this day: You stated "to be treated as a foreigner when I eventually returned to New Zealand". This is despite the fact we live in the same area that she grew up in and many of the local folks were her "school mates".

Hi Kiwi abroad, sorry, haven't had time to get to this thread to say my piece, and defend you, but I haven't been here long, have read some of your backposts, and therefore know you aren't a troll, but this was locked before i could get in and defend you. I thought elle was ok, but realise not.
Obviously I know not all Kiwis are the same, as I am not only married to one, for a long time, but also have many lovely friends who are.
Anyway, thumbs up for the above post, very good.

Thanks for this - it's annoying to have to watch one's speech, isn't it. I was always being b****-slapped by my MIL for using the verb "get" too much. I am sure she was right, and I do. But it's hard to change long patterns. That much more so if they are "lazy" ones. Thanks for the vocab trivia - enjoyed it and enjoy reading you on the forum.
