It doesn't help that once again I have a manager who has not come from an IT background, she's got a degree in Sociology, and has already let her PR mask slip, in moment of unguardedness at Friday night drinks, when she revealed how much contempt she has for "nerds" who use computers, but implying (quite correctly I have to say) that they have few social skills and she can't talk to them. OF course you can't talk to them! You have no comptuer skills! Whilst these comments are true, do we need a manager with utter contempt for the people who are engineering the software which is paying for her weekly nail manicures? I think not! I swear, I utterly despair that the majority of IT managers in NZ have no computer background. How do they get these roles? I don't know. Actually, I've gone beyond caring, since my contract expires shortly.

I have a Sociology degree myself, but cannot see how sociology relates to computing - they are completely different fields - computing is technical. sociology is social science and humanities as an Arts Degree. It would be like someone with an MA in History running an engineering firm. Maybe she had an Uncle who worked for your company - nepotism is really strong here.

I'm not against any degree, per se, but sticking a sociology graduate in psuedo charge of an IT dept is a big mistake.
