have you tried friending any people from your country? I didnt have any local friends either, but I knew people who were from my country so we had parties on occation. I had a couple of kiwi friends too from work. Though we didnt meet that often. Only when we drank and smoked weed.

This whole thing about the top secret lying pom, who wheedled his way to the top (or showed tremendous initiative, depending on your viewpoint), got me thinking. Sooner or later the psychologists are gonna trot out the same tired theories....

And I realised that the criteria for a narcisistic personality can equally apply to NZ.

http://www.nzherald.co.nz/n...objectid=10672624

Quote:Often bright and arrogant, they have good social skills, an inflated ego and commonly also an underlying low self-esteem.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wik...sonality_disorder

Quote:In order for a person to be diagnosed with narcissistic personality disorder (NPD) they must meet five or more of the following symptoms:

Quote:Has a grandiose sense of self-importance (e.g., exaggerates achievements and talents, expects to be recognized as superior without commensurate achievements)

characterized by affectation of grandeur or splendor or by absurd exaggeration...Erm, 100% pure, anyone?

Quote:Is preoccupied with fantasies of unlimited success, power, brilliance, beauty, or ideal love

50/50....

Quote:Believes that he or she is "special" and unique and can only be understood by, or should associate with, other special or high-status people (or institutions). Rarely acknowledges mistakes and/or imperfections

Big tick.

Quote:Requires excessive admiration

HUGE tick.

Quote:Has a sense of entitlement, i.e., unreasonable expectations of especially favorable treatment or automatic compliance with his or her expectations

50/50

Quote:Is interpersonally exploitative, i.e., takes advantage of others to achieve his or her own ends

Big tick - e.g. migrants shipped in to do the dirty work...

Quote:Lacks empathy: is unwilling or unable to recognize or identify with the feelings and needs of others.

Big tick (e.g. "fuck off if you don't like it".

Quote:Is often envious of others or believes that others are envious of him or her

Big tick. Australia, anyone?

Quote:Shows arrogant, haughty behaviors or attitude.
Scornfully and condescendingly proud? Big tick.

Diagnosis from Dr Seer. NZ shows remarkably strong narcisistic tendencies. Recommendation : immediate incarceration for an unknown duration in a maximum security jail, er, I mean hospital, for its and our own safety. ECT (Electro-convulsive therapy) at regular intervals until patient displays return to normality. Strong psychotropic drugs to aid the recovery process. Intensive one-to-one counselling sessions. Role play, and psycho-drama recommended. Re-evaluate patient in 15 years' time.

                                      Not reading all you write....
BUT..you can NOT read in statistics of how it is in a country!
Some countries have a culture where some crimes are reported and some not. Also depending on how you yourself act and behave and which environments you visit.
But I have to say that I am much more aware and scared here than in other countries where I have lived.
Seen crimes around me here due to people with drug problems.

                                      @ almdudler

Welcome to the site almdudler. Many kiwis find it hard to adjust back in New Zealand once they have lived overseas for few years. May be thats why many never return. Its only few years for you so hope it passes soon, and you make the most of your university life. Some of us are stuck here for a long time with very narrow escape routes. You are young and have the whole world to explore.

I had a kiwi friend at work few years back who had lived in Japan for some years. He was also planning to go back to Japan as he found it hard to stay in Auckland, which he thought had very little opportunity plus not much going for it. You are not alone. Keep us posted and some perspective on New Zealand's economic future from time to time will be great.

I never knew, before coming to NZ, there are more than 15000 earthquakes each year in New Zealand and around 250 significant ones. People will surely think twice before coming to such a "shack y" place.
Hi foxcrofts and welcome! I wanted to welcome you a few days ago, but needed to stear clear of this thread lest I rant and rave and lose focus. Just keep reading this forum and post as you like. Take what suits you and leave what doesn't.

I have many friend from the RSA. Lovely people who have never expressed any racist ideation to me (the black, coloured or white SAs I know). Your stories are different and I find that as a people, SAs settle more quickly that people from less unsettled homelands. But IT IS HARD and it is sad and it is lonely. I relate to your husband and so have many others who have come to this site!

Do whatever you can to get through this (even if it means going home and being a pauper for awhile). Life is too short to spend days on end wishing. As I said, I know many SAs here and to be honest, the people who have integrated the best are those who have decided there is no turning back. As people have said, some people have gone home.

Take care of yourself and give your husband some TLC as he is likely dumbstruck by the culture he faces everyday at work. It is like being on the other side of the looking glass sometimes and it can make you mental.

Secondly, if $2.00 donations to school student fund raising are included, than New Zealand surely will be in the top position cause, even with my tight budget, I manage to donate $2.00 now and than.

Many fortune 500 companies are also headquartered in San Francisco and am sure that has an impact on the real estate prices, plus Christchurch GDP is around 16 billion compared to 300 billion for San Francisco with a GDP per capita of US$92000.00.

Nobody knows what the impact of the earthquake will be on house prices in Christchurch it could be positive or negative. They could go down for a while, but it could also have a positive effect long term with the estimates $4 billion reconstruction and rugby world cup next year, the earthquake will soon be forgotten.

Here's one thing that's definitely going to have an impact on future house prices.
