Very interesting topic Danger Man. Considering Diaspora refers to those who left their country either forcibly or voluntary, it leaves us with two groups of people, in this case, two groups of Kiwis. The best place to evaluate Kiwi Diaspora would be Australia, where they are present in large, almost abnormally large, numbers. Whether they are NZ's best and brightest is debatable, one finds either of the two groups in a variety of occupations, mostly, as stated by the Kiwis in Australia themselves, in jobs the Australians don’t like doing. LOL. From the observations we have made, they all have one thing in common though, they wish to stay in Australia on a permanent basis. Excluding family visits, few of them return, not even to retire. They earnestly seek out Employers who can sponsor them for Australian citizenship, and, in so doing, leave themselves open to exploitation a great deal. In our opinion, the brightest and best should not have to resort to such tactics. I guess one should not over analyze but, generally speaking, if you are confident of your qualifications you usually have options.

that the standards here are lower. I remember looking at rental accomidation a few years back and I was shocked at the low standards. It seems like some twisted right of passage for students and renters to live in general apathetic filth. It may have something to do with how depressing the condition of second hand furniture and the condition of rental accomidation is on the brain.

I am currently 'between contracts' and have certainly had some problems getting work (in IT).

So many times it is a question of "...but you havent got experience with that", or "..you dont know about that".

Doesnt matter that that you could make up for that in about 10 minutes with the depth of experience you have.

And when I have got contracts, blimey, its not like they are exactly blessed with talent.

So many people are purely task focussed, plodding away doing the same thing day in day out with no idea of why or how it might be done better, just looking forward to the next morning tea or end of month piss-up.

                                      >The major difficulty being finding ways to encourage
>the non-English speaking populations to make use of
>the services that are provided.
Before u ppl thumbing me down, do u guys know that I regularly attend to some DHB meetings to give feedbacks?

There are a few reasons why Asians are not using the services apart from language barrier.
1. Services lack of promotions among the Asians community.
2. Asians may have no idea that there are services in their local DHBs that suit their needs because those kind of services may not be provided from where they come from. They simply cannot imagine that the services exists.
3. Those services may not meet the needs of Asian consumers and their expectations. My personal experiences and stories from others tell that sometimes you just stuck between departments, being kicking around departments and not able to get to the service that were expected. The waiting time sometimes also far too long sometimes. There are also services that Asian consumers feel there is no real benefits after using them. That turn Asian consumers down.
4. Some Asian staffs are cutting corners, not following the proper procedure and practice professionally to deliver quality services to Asian consumers even though they are well trained, qualified, meeting all the requirements and suppose to act professionally.

I'm from the South too, small town suburbia, little crime or problems and wasn't unhappy with my life in the UK one little bit. I had easy access to three airports, motorways North and South, mega shopping malls 30 mins away, getting anywhere wasn't ever a problem, hour to the seaside, trains, buses, Europe 1 to 2 hours away and earning a decent enough salary to afford time out to enjoy it all. It's only with hindsight I now realise just what I gave up to come here and it hurts.
I don't know much about him and can't really comment on particular policy, but a quick google found this:

http://www.jonathancoleman....se-community.html
Seems like a good start. I tend to forget that our local MPs can and do provide these kinds of assistance and support to the community.
I am pleased for Pansy though, Minister for Ethnic and Women's Affairs and those portfolios will suit her to a tee. She's the first ever Asian cabinet minister and ot shows that times, they are a changing:
Government Agency: Fine. Sweet as. Choice. No worries. (insert other random nonsensical phrases that are supposed to mean everything is ok, here) Just let us know when the case is over. Hope it works out ok for you.
